Scholarships

A number of scholarships are available to students enrolled in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering, including those listed below. More information on scholarships may be obtained by contacting the Clark School's Scholarships website.

A. L. Brown Award
Established by the New England Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. The award is based on the student's academic performance and fire protection engineering activities. The award provides a variable amount toward the student's academic expenses for a student from New England.

Chicago Chapter SFPE Award
Created by the Chicago Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. The award is based on the student's academic performance and fire protection engineering activities. The award provides a variable amount toward the student's tuition and fees for a student from the state of Illinois.

Donald W. Belles Scholarship
Named in honor of an alumnus of the department, the Donald W. Belles Scholarship is awarded to juniors or seniors in fire protection engineering. The award is based on a student's academic performance, merit and need. The award provides a variable amount to Maryland or Out-of-State students.

Fire Suppression System Association Scholarships
Scholarships awarded by the FSSA Educational Foundation to employees or relatives of employees of an FSSA member firm or a group affiliated with the fire suppression industry.

Frank J. Fee Jr. Award
Established by the National Fire Protection Association to provide financial aid for an outstanding student or students enrolled in Fire Protection Engineering. The award is based on the student's academic record, fire protection interest, and academic potential. The award provides a maximum of $5,000.00 for tuition and fees to Maryland and Out-of-State students.

GE Industrial, Security Scholarship
This undergraduate fire detection scholarship provides financial aid to support the academic expenses of a first or second year undergraduate student. The award is based on the student's academic performance and demonstrated fire protection engineering interest. The award provides a maximum of $6,000 toward the student's academic expenses to Maryland or Out-of-State students.

Honeywell Fire Solutions Group Scholarships
Two $2,500 scholarships are available to fire protection engineering students in their 3rd, or 4th years with a grade point average of 2.5 or better. The scholarships are funded by Honeywell Fire Solutions Group.

The James O. Grendahl Memorial Scholarship
Established by the Mr. and Mrs. E. Grendahl in memory of their son. This scholarship is intended to assist outstanding students in fire protection engineering.

James R. O'Neil Award
Established by the New York - New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. The award is based on the student's academic performance and fire protection engineering activities. The award provides a variable amount toward the student's academic expenses for a student from the metropolitan New York City area.

John D. Cook III
Established by the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. The award is based on the student's academic performance and fire protection engineering activities. The award provides a variable amount toward the student's academic expenses for a student from the chapter area.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Maryland State Firemen's Award
Created by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Maryland State Firemen's Association to provide one four-year award of variable amount to a resident of the State of Maryland. Applicants for this award must have the approval of the Scholarship committee of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Maryland State Firemen's Association.

Maryland State Firemen's Awards
Created by the Maryland State Firemen's Association to provide a minimum of one four-year scholarship award each year for a resident of the State of Maryland enrolled in Fire Protection Engineering. The award is for tuition and fees. The award is based on high school record, character, and fire protection interest of candidates.

Philip L. DeCamara Jr. Memorial Award
Established by the American Fire Sprinkler Association to provide financial aid to an outstanding junior or senior student. The award is based on the student's character, leadership and academic excellence with a demonstrated personal commitment to the area of fire safety. The award provides an maximum of $4,000 toward the payment of tuition and fees to Maryland and Out-of-State students.

RJA Group Award
Established by Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc. to provide financial aid to support the academic expenses of an undergraduate student. The award is based on the student's academic performance and demonstrated fire protection engineering interest. The award provides a maximum of $3,000 toward the student's academic expenses to Maryland and Out-of-State students.

Robert M. Gagnon Centennial Scholarship
The Robert M. Gagnon Centennial Scholarship is an annual award for Junior or Senior fire protection engineering students. Candidates must satisfactorily complete ENFP 255 and demonstrate outstanding skill and interest in fire protection systems design. Two $500 awards are given annually.

Roger R. Cholin Award
Established by J.M. Cholin Consultants, Inc. The award is available to students majoring in fire protection engineering in good academic standing with financial need. The award is named in honor and memory of Roger R. Cholin, who devoted his working life to the advancement of fire protection through his leadership at Safety First Products, Corp. and later Firetek Corporation.

Robert W. Schirmer Award
Established by the Schirmer Engineering Corporation. Two awards are available based on the student's academic performance and demonstrated fire protection engineering accomplishments. One award provides a variable amount to an outstanding junior or senior student, and the other award is for a freshman or sophomore.

Sarah B. Bryan Scholarship
Named in honor of Sarah Bryan, late wife of the founding chair Professor John L. Bryan. This scholarship was established to provide assistance to female undergraduate students. Multiple awards are given annually, based on academic record, character, and volunteer- or career-related fire protection service. Each award provides a minimum of $5,000 for tuition and fees to Maryland and out-of-state undergraduate students.

Wells Fund Scholarship
Established by The Wells Fund, a component of the Prince George’s Community Foundation, to support students enrolled in the University of Maryland Fire Protection Engineering program. The award is available to Maryland residents, with special preference for residents of Prince George’s County. Up to three scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each are awarded annually. Scholarships may be awarded to incoming freshmen as well as upper classmen enrolled in the undergraduate program. Scholarship awards are based upon academic performance and financial need as determined by the University’s financial aid criteria. Applying students are expected to demonstrate a 2.5 grade point average or better.
