Each year, the Center for Life Safety Education (CLSE) awards $7,000 in scholarships to two exemplary fire protection engineering students at the University of Maryland. Named in memory of the tireless fire sprinkler pioneer Philip DeCamara, the Philip L. DeCamara, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in the fall of 1984 to honor the man who used his creative talents during his lifetime to advance the goals of the fire sprinkler industry. The 2007 recipients of the DeCamara Memorial Scholarship are Chi Do and Alyson Blair.

First place honors and a $4,000 scholarship were awarded to Chi T. Do. The senior fire protection engineering major boasts a 3.96 GPA and regularly appears on the Dean's List. He is involved in Engineering Club as its member secretary and is a member of the Salamander Honor Society, an engineering academic achievement group at the University of Maryland.

Selected as the second place winner, Alyson Blair will receive a $3,000 scholarship. An honor roll regular with a 3.83 GPA, the 20-year-old fire protection engineering major from Columbia, Mo. engages in a number of extracurricular activities including the student chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Women in Engineering Girl Scout Saturdays Program, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the University of Maryland's Women's Club Lacrosse team, and an A. James Clark School of Engineering Ambassador.

In its 23rd year, the DeCamara scholarship is funded solely through donations by individuals and companies.
