The Beta Chapter of Salamander Honorary Fire Protection Engineering Society invites you to participate in the Fire Protection Engineering Career Day on Wednesday February, 21st 2007. The event is jointly sponsored by the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland and Salamander, the Honorary Fire Protection Engineering Society and will be held in the Colony Ballroom of the University of Maryland’s Stamp Student Union.

The purpose of this program is twofold. The first goal is to bring employers and motivated students together to discuss employment opportunities with the intent of filling current and future positions in the organizations. Fire protection and undecided engineering majors looking for full-time, part-time, co-op, internship, and summer positions will attend the event. Secondly, we hope to provide students with a clearer picture of what it means to work in the fire protection engineering industry.

We have reserved the ballroom from 9am until 3pm on the 21st. The day will most likely be divided into two sessions by lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During the morning session, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., companies are given the chance to make a presentation. Due to time constraints, not all companies may get the chance to present and therefore the first companies to respond will be given priority with the presentation time slots. The presentations should be limited to approximately 8 minutes and should focus on the company’s scope of work. To prevent repetition, employers are encouraged to outline or detail a past or present project that is unique to the organization. Audio/visual equipment will be available. If a company is planning to use a PowerPoint presentation, a copy will need to be sent in advance so it can be loaded prior to the morning activities. The afternoon session, 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., will be a "break-out," where each employer will be provided with a 3' x 6' table and several chairs. During this time, students will be able to roam and visit the employers of interest to them. We envision this as an opportunity to learn more specifics about the company/agency and possibly set up a follow-up interview. The students will be encouraged to bring resumes. Once the list of companies who will be attending is confirmed, an updated time schedule will follow.

We hope that you can join us for what promises to be an exciting and productive day. We are asking for a donation of $100.00 to help defray the cost of the event. Breakfast and lunch will be catered at the ballroom. The donation can be given by cash or by check made out to Salamander. Your response is requested by Monday January 15, 2007, and can be mailed to the above address c/o Chris Moran or emailed to cwm@umd.edu. Please indicate whether or not your company would like to present in the morning, and a current email and phone number of the employer attending. If there are any questions, please feel free to email me or call me at (301) 512-6805.

Sincerely,

Chris Moran
President
