Pre-registration Notes

Greetings from the Associate Chair

Early registration for the Spring semester begins in late October and continues to early December.  Early registration for the Fall semester begins in late March and continues to early May.  YOUR SPECIFIC REGISTRATION DATE WILL BE SENT TO YOU VIA E MAIL from the Records and Registrations Office . Students can also obtain their date via Testudo. Please note that this is the date you are to register. Therefore, you must have met with your faculty mentor and received your mandatory advising prior to that time. In addition, all freshman who began at UMCP in Fall 2005 or after and all transfer students who began at UMCP in Fall 2006 or after should have their graduation plans completed and approved before they will be allowed to register.

You do not need to come to the FPE Office to pick up advising materials. All the information that you need is accessible on the Web.
I wish you much success with the remainder of this semester. Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or need assistance.
Sincerely,
James Milke, Ph.D.
Associate Chair, FPE Department

Mandatory Advising

All Fire Protection Engineering students are required to receive mandatory advising. Please carefully read the instructions below as well as the information on the pages directly linked from this page.

How to Select Your Schedule

Students who have already completed their 4-year graduation plan should have a good idea of what courses they should be taking. However, if you have not completed a graduation plan or you wish to make minor or major adjustments to your plan of study you should carefully review all registration information on the FPE advising website.  A sample 4-yr. plan is included on that site.  You should also review the most up-to-date schedule of classes on Testudo. You should select the courses you wish to take before your advising appointment.

How to Satisfy Mandatory Advising

You need to make an advising appointment to see the FPE academic advisor.  Advising via phone or email is not acceptable, except for students who are spending the semester abroad or in a co-op position.

Student Athletes

If you are an athlete you must also receive advising from an advisor in the College Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support (OUAAS).

Special Approvals & Exceptions

The Engineering College Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support (OUAAS) is responsible for a range of special exceptions including the following:

  • Registering for more than 18 credits in a semester
  • Permission to register at another university
  • Violations of the repeat policy
    • Registering for a course for the third time
    • Exceeding the 18-credit repeat limit
  • Approval for a time conflict (required when the times of two courses overlap)

Please do not request these exceptions from the FPE advisor. The FPE Department has no authority to grant any of these exceptions.

Senior Audits

After you have completed 90 credits (or before you begin your second to last semester before graduation) you should submit a request for a senior audit. To request an audit stop by the FPE Undergraduate Office (3106 J.M.Patterson) to conduct the review. The Undergraduate Office will complete a review of your FPE requirements before submitting the audit to the College Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support (OUAAS). An OUAAS advisor will complete the review of CORE and other requirements.
